June 11 - CVC and Macroinvertebrates Study

That day, we started our agenda today by a discussion of follow-on project. The discussion led by Suzanne explains us about the criteria of follow-on project we would run after we return home. One of the criteria is that the project must give positive effects to the local community where the project runs.

After the discussion ended, we went to Resource Authority Building to have a mini conference by Clean Valley Council. It is an NGO founded in 1983 that handles trash management in the city of Roanoke. They hold many activities, like Stream School, Service Projects, Waterway Clean-Up, and Clean Valley day.

Our last visit for that day was to Hollins University. We would study about macro invertebrate there. The facilitator was Renee Godard, the Director of Environmental Studies. We started our study in a science laboratory. There were many samples of small organisms which become the water indicator. Water indicator? Yeah, it means the existence of those organisms can be used to determine whether the water is good or not. Besides doing indoor study, we did also outdoor study to look for that type of small organisms directly from the river near to the university. It was so fun activity. We picked each of them and we observed them using a magnifier.
